How did the telecom operator launch more services using only one fiber?

What challenges does the market currently face?
The telecommunications industry has faced very rapid growth in the amount and type of data.
The next-generation network – 5G – driving the development of IoT means that data and video are transmitted in real time from multiple devices simultaneously. The quality of such transmission is determined by the operator’s chosen technology and systems, which aim for secure, optimal and reliable transmission.
In an effort to provide services at the highest level, it is necessary to significantly increase bandwidth connections. This is the challenge faced by all telecommunications operators – both smaller and larger, providing services on a large scale and with huge data resources.
The problem: limited number of fibers
Telecom operators are realizing the growing need to expand bandwidth. This is what customers expect from them and this is what they must do to keep up with the market and emerging trends. But what if they have only one fiber at their disposal?
Such problem was faced by one of our customers – medium size telecommunication operator – who leased 1 fiber from another, much bigger telecommunication operator. On the same fiber – using single fiber inserts – he had data transmission running. At the time of sending the inquiry to us, his demand for services in this relationship had increased, so the challenge he faced was: either lease another fiber or increase the efficiency of using the one currently leased.
Solution: Implementation of CWDM
A much more beneficial choice was to expand the transmission capabilities of the existing fiber. This is what we did.
Implemented CWDM at the client’s site, enabled transmission of different data streams over a single fiber. It happened so thanks to i.a. density that is characteristic feature of xWDM technology.
Additional CWDM amplification e.g. with use of optical modules standard for this technique caused that client in short time increased capacity of his network, launched new services and saved huge money.
What was the purpose of implementing CWDM?
- Launching more data services/transmissions.
- The ability to transmit data at 10 Gbps.
- Improvement of fiber utilization efficiency.
- Reduction of costs for the lease of additional fibers (use of existing fiber instead of leasing additional ones).
